16 Iconic Photographers Who Changed the Fashion Landscape – CR Fashion Book

From the clothes that are designed to the models who wear them, when it comes to the world of fashion photography, the attention has always been focused on what’s ahead. But without the expertise of the photographers behind the camera, the magic that we see plastered across billboards and pages of a magazine would never be possible.

While the earliest fashion photographers date back to the mid-19th century, the art of fashion photography didn’t take off until the early 20th century, thanks to early fashion publications like Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. Up until Condé Nast hired German photographer Baron Adolph de Meyer in 1913, all of the fashion editorials had been painstakingly illustrated by hand. Soon after, fashion had become more accessible, with photography helping to place the couturiers of the ‘20s and ‘30s (the Schiaparellis and Chanels of the world) on the worldwide stage.

As the decades went on and the role of the model transformed into something bigger than ever, photography became even more essential to fashion storytelling. The rigid, almost sterile aesthetic of early-20th century fashion imagery melted away into something entirely different. The top photographers in the industry–those who were able to create their own signature shooting styles–cemented their names in fashion photography lore, creating ever-lasting artistic relationships with the models they photographed.
