Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023) Movie Review.

movie Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania brings a new tone that is very different from the previous two films. Still fun, but a little shaky as a foundation for Phase 5 at the expense of Scott Lang’s story in favor of Kang’s presence.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania Movie Synopsis

Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) has had a good life after the events of The Blip, becoming famous after publishing a book. Meanwhile, her daughter, Cassie Lang (Kathryn Newton) thinks that Scott is starting to forget his responsibilities as a superhero.

Secretly, Cassie is helped by Hope (Evangeline Lilly) and Hank (Michael Douglas) to create a means to send signals to the Quantum Realm. But when they activate the device, everyone is trapped back in the micro-world.

Cassie and Scott are separated from Hope, Hank and Janet (Michelle Pfeiffer). They eventually discover that Janet has a long history that includes 30 years stuck in the Quantum Realm; where he faces Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Major) who is the ruler of the world.

The opening of a new era of the MCU

movie Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is the opening of a new arc from MCU Phase 5 with the presence of the next big villain after Thanos. It’s not a smooth opening, but it’s quite entertaining. Especially for fans of Marvel and the comic series.

The drastic change in tone is an important point that sets it apart from the previous two films. Where this time Scott Lang is present in a much more serious story, although it still leaves some room for humorous situations.

This change can provide a new atmosphere, just like what Taika Waititi did Thor: Ragnarok (2019). But on the other hand, why change if fans love the previous two films?

Perhaps this shift in tone is consistent with Kang’s performance, which is brilliantly played by Jonathan Major. Making Kang’s appearances on the big screen feel even more dangerous. And Major immediately became a terrifying specter for the entire Marvel universe.

But this movie still relies on the theme of family that ties all of Scott and Cassie’s arcs together. This includes the introduction of Cassie as a new superhero, a format that is further deepened throughout the films and series in Phase 4.

Not to mention explaining what Janet van Dyne did when she was trapped for 30 years in the Quantum Realm, as well as continuing the story of the villain in the first film by appearing as a new character. Presenting phenomenal characters in a way that could be considered genius, although perhaps not all professional fans will.

The interesting premise of the adventures of Scott and friends in the Quantum Realm is presented quite nicely. Made like ‘mini Avengers’ with a large narrative scale, although the story is not very dense. Confirming this movie as part of the popcorn flick from Marvel’s ‘playground’.

All eyes were on Kang

It’s no secret if Quantum was instrumental in introducing the next major villain to the Marvel universe. The making of Paul Rudd’s third solo film as Scott Lang had high expectations.

Plus, this movie reveals the early history of the MCU version of Kang the Conqueror. Especially when compared to the arrival of Thanos before Avengers: Infinity War. The villain character is only fixed in the title part of the post or appears briefly in the movie.

While Kang, after his first appearance in Loki (2021), is the main villain in this film. The anticipation and promotion of Kang as the next big villain after Thanos has certainly absorbed all the attention that Scott Lang has carefully devoted to him.

But Quantumania manages to offer a new atmosphere rarely offered by other Marvel films; Epic star wars with massive battles in the micro quantum world. Like Star Wars or some other 80s science fiction.

movie Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania managed to bring the audience of the Marvel universe into a new world as the foundation of Marvel’s Phase 5. But still in the old format, without new characters, leaving some space for Scott Lang to shine under the charm of Jonathan Major, who is ready to sweep the Marvel universe.

Screenplay: Jeff Loveness
