Beyond the Spider-Verse’ To Open to $150M Worldwide – Deadline

Last night at the world premiere of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse There was a huge sigh of relief from the crowd of animators inside Westwood’s Regency Village Theatre: the $100 million sequel to the Oscar-winning animated film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, done; having finished post-production literally just ten days ago after a five-year journey to screen, which included a Covid delay due to backlogs in post-production houses. Starting today overseas and tomorrow in the US/Canada, the continuing adventures of Miles Morales will see the light of day in what is expected to be a 150 million dollars global opening.

Overseas this is a designed 60 million dollars opening, including $20 million from China — which loves it Spider Man (the first animated picture grossed over $62 million there)as well as Belgium, France, Holland today; Australia, Brazil, Germany, Italy, Mexico, UK tomorrow and Spain and PRC on Friday. The first installment in similar markets and at today’s prices, including China, opened at $49 million. In the US with 4,200 theaters including Imax and PLF, the industry projection for the 2 hour 20 minute animated sequel stands at 80-90 million dollars during Friday through Sunday.

The first film, which opened in mid-December 2018 in 35.3 million dollars USA and finished with $190.2 million, attracted a male majority at 67% with solid diversity participation of 21% Hispanic and Latino viewers, 16% black and 15% Asian. These demos are expected to return starting tomorrow at 2pm, when previews begin in 3,500 countries. Given the fanboy-laden nature of the franchise, it’s not expected to hurt Disney’s momentum The little mermaid on weekend 2 which is expected to be approx 40 million dollars-58%.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse swings into Japan, another key territory for the superhero, on June 16, while South Korea will see the sequel on June 21. At CinemaCon 2022, Sony showed the first 15 minutes of the film. This despite the fact that the sequel was postponed from October 7 last year to this weekend. Why the wait? Directors Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson were looking to take the avant-garde animation style of photography to a whole other level from the first installment.

‘Boogeyman’

In the wake of legendary/screen gems machinery, Lionsgate’s About My Father and Briarcliff’s Kandahar Skipping through the four-day holiday weekend with mid-single-digit debuts, it seems smaller films are officially dead. Not so if you’re a horror movie – you’re very much alive, and that’s certainly the case with Hulu’s 20th Century Disney/Studios theatrical pivot, Boogeyman which is expected to be done around 15 million dollars, give or take in 3,000 theaters. Previews start at 7pm on Thursday. Young women aged 17-34, who will not Through the spider web, are the sweet spot for this PG-13 Rob Savage-directed feature film of Stephen King’s 1973 short story.

Pictured are high school student Sadie Harper (Sophie Thatcher) and her little sister Sawyer (Obi-Wan KenobiLittle Princess Leia, Viven Lyra Blair) are still reeling from their mother’s recent death. Devastated by his pain, their father Will (Chris Messina), a therapist by profession, gives them neither the support nor the love they try to seek from him. When a desperate patient suddenly shows up at their house asking for help, they bring in a terrifying entity that preys on the family and feeds on their deepest suffering.

Disney screened the film from producers Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen and Dan Levine and determined it was ripe for the big screen.

How is the summer box office going?

According to ComScore, for the period May 5-29 it is 716.2 million dollars so far, -3% from the same period a year ago.
