Can you use Instagram themes on desktop?

Meta’s new text-based social app, FIBER, it’s finally here, and it might be the best alternative to Twitter yet — but is there a desktop version? The company unveiled Themes to the public in July 2023, offering users seamless integration with their existing Instagram accounts. Indeed, it is attracting users at an amazing rate; CEO Mark Zuckerberg tweeted less than a day after the launch that the site had already passed 30 million signups.

Threads was launched with apps for iOS and Android, and the interface of these apps is almost identical to that of Twitter. Users can post text (up to 500 characters), links, photos, and videos, and interact with others’ posts in all the familiar ways, including options to like, repost, and quote. Unfortunately, it’s strictly a mobile app experience for now, but that won’t always be the case. In response to users asking about a web or desktop version, Instagram head Adam Mosseri said the team is working on it.

To use the themes, users must have an Instagram account, so anyone who doesn’t already have an Instagram account should create one. Those with existing accounts can easily link the two by clicking on the “Sign in with InstagramAfter downloading the Threads app from the App Store or Google Play Store. Users with multiple accounts will be able to create a thread profile for each of them.

In addition to not having a desktop website, Themes so far lacks several key features that will be crucial to its long-term success. Currently, there are no direct messages or hashtags working and no feed that shows users’ posts only from the people they follow. There’s also no option to schedule posts, and switching between multiple accounts is a somewhat tedious process. Mosser and members of the Themes team have addressed many of these issues in the answers page, assuring users that they will all be coming soon.

Even as it stands now, Threads looks like a promising entry in Twitter’s ever-growing list of competitors, largely thanks to its integration with Instagram’s pre-existing user base that runs into the billions. For people already involved in the Meta app ecosystem, this is an easy jump. Meta also says he is working to do FIBER Compatible with the ActivityPub protocol used by other social platforms like Mastodon, so users can easily interact between different apps.
