God Is a Bullet (2023) movie review and synopsis.

The opening is a broken canvas of scattered events: In one instance, a girl with a pink balloon, waiting for her mother outside a supermarket, is kidnapped by a group of Satanists in a black van. She will transform into Case (Maika Monroe), a blonde, tattooed heroine of cult leader Cyrus (Karl Glusman). We then jump to an unknown time after, during Christmas, where, in a ghastly scene similar to a clockwork orange, the same cadre of thugs rape and murder Hightower’s ex-wife, kill her husband and make off with the daughter his. Each shot from a double-barreled shotgun that sends the emaciated body of Hightower’s ex-wife tumbling into a pool is more hilarious than the last, and is as incomprehensible in its tenor as the film’s dark plot. .

The first few minutes, a desperate attempt to transport viewers to the heart of this terrible film, signal a strained desire by writer/director Nick Cassavetes to remove the tension from the clash of crushing realism and familiar formalism. .

The film’s discordant tones begin when naïve Bob recruits the worldly Case—she recently quit the group and is currently in rehab—to track down Cyrus’ gang. They hit the road in a pickup truck with a cache of weapons, arriving at a deserted house belonging to Ferryman (Jamie Foxx), a tattoo artist with an amputated hand and the kind of white spots on his face that are common to them. . with vitiligo. The makeup used on Foxx just looks gross. The same goes for all the characters’ tattoos, which are so inked and well-defined that you’re left wondering if these muggers get touched up every couple of months. These are a few smaller wobbles in authenticity that ultimately feel like smoldering love.

Up to a point, Cassavetes wants you to know you’re watching a movie. It features explicit images of bloody satanic sacrifices, which remind viewers that the film is adapted from Boston Teran’s book of the same title, but not based on true events. He and editor Bella Erikson also slow battle scenes, colored by Mozart, to break the spell of this naturalistic road movie. For example, the over-the-top but committed performances by Glusman, and a host of band members, also push the limits of believability.

You can almost see how “God is a Bullet” could be an intriguing study of religious faith amidst a world of unspeakable horror. But Cassavetes’ extended screenplay interrupts the pace and rhythm of his story. There’s an entire subplot involving January Jones as the trophy wife of the town sheriff (Paul Johansson) that can be completely removed and you won’t miss a thing. Cyrus’ background also needs to be cut.
