Director James Gunn’s Swan Song at Marvel Studios, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, is breaking out this weekend, the de facto start of the summer box office, with an eye on $250 million worldwide. Of these, 110 million dollars come from the locals and 140 million dollars from abroad.

Furrowing the brows of some box office sources, is how the beginning of the trilogy is about to be out Volume 2Top US/Canada opening of $146.5 million in 2017. Before we scream “trequelitis,” which most superhero movies have “Teflon” against, let’s allow this latest Marvel sequel to play itself out. Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 3 has the longest running time in the trilogy at 2 hours 30 minutes, and currently has the lowest (yet solid) reviews at 78% fresh (versus 85% certified fresh on Vol. 2 and 92% certified fresh on original title 2014). Since the comments appeared last week for GOTG3, Advance ticket sales are up. However, tracking is always shaky when it comes to predicting the power of $100 million openers, and after all, not many studios can lay claim to them. GOTG3 The expected $100M+ opening will mark Marvel Studios’ sixth post-pandemic opening.

While the picture is hot with all the demos, we hear this GOTG supports a little female considering lead star Chris Pratt.

China remains the flexible factor in how high or low the offshore start goes for the trio. There are some limited previews there on Wednesday and Thursday before the official launch on Friday. The film currently leads pre-sales for Friday, but is facing headwinds with several local pictures in the mix. Saturday is also a working day.

Along with the fact that Marvel has yet to return to the market since the unofficial ban on movies with its characters was lifted. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (several months after release elsewhere) and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania in a bow for the day and date of February, and there is reason to be skeptical. To be fair, it’s not just Marvel, it’s every Hollywood movie out there Avatar that do not shine.

Historically speaking, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 debuted to $173M overseas, at today’s rates and including $49M from China.
