Impossible – Dead Reckoning’ Opens to 5-Day Franchise Record $80M – Box Office – Deadline

SATURDAY PM UPDATE: Facts are facts and Paramount/Skydance’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning The first part set a domestic 5-day opening record for the franchise with 80 million dollarswe listen

The previous best 5-day opening was in the 2000s Mission: Impossible II which cleared a Memorial Day weekend of $78.8 million from Wednesday-Sunday. The 3-day record still belongs to 2018 Mission: Impossible – Fallout which posted $61.2 million. Dead Reckoning looks like it’s going to go into 56.2 million dollars in 4,327 theaters, including Imax and PLF auditoriums. Dead Reckoning Oscar-winning director Christopher McQuarrie is directing a MISSION movie after 2015 Cheating nation AND Fall, fail, fall down. Technically, he has four MISSION films under his belt as he is also a director Dead Reckoning Part Two. This film had to be put on hold recently due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.

As we already told you, though Dead Reckoning‘s 5-day run is close to Disney/Lucasfilm’s oldest finale Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny ($83.8 million Friday-Tuesday), a film we heralded as a complete box office concern on its $300 million production cost), this Mission Impossible the sequel is a different animal as it has excellent reviews (96% certified fresh) and excellent audience scores with an A CinemaScore and 5 Posttrak Stars to take it out, especially overseas. Dial of Destiny it doesn’t have that momentum. Nancy will have more in the AM, but a global launch here of $200m + per Dead Reckoning it is not out of the realm of possibility. In likes for likes and with today’s preview rates, Mission: Impossible – Fallout debuted with a WW $247.8M global start; again with a strong start in China of $74 million. Currently, in early numbers, we’re looking at +$22M Dead Reckoning in China.

Proof that the good word works Dead reckoning: Remember how we feared the sequel wouldn’t deliver much with a $15.5 million opening day (plus previews)? How did rivals rate the sequel’s $70 million 5-day haul? Well, here it is Dead Reckoning coming much higher.

Saturday was $21.3 million, repeating a 28% increase over Friday’s $16.7 million. Sunday figures to ease -15% with $18.1 million. Despite that wild $90 million projection, Dead Reckoning ended up performing like a Tom Cruise MISSION movie will.

Also doing well here is Angels Studios’ anti-child-trafficking thriller The Sound of Freedom which is being formed for an assessee 24.7 million dollars second weekend in second place, up a whopping 26% (when does that ever happen?) for a total of 83.2 million dollars in 3265 theaters. This Jim Caviezel movie is doing well north of $100 million.
