This year, the Met Gala honors the life and legacy of Karl Lagerfeld, following the theme “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.” Lagerfeld has worked with several houses, from a young and eager apprentice to a renowned creative director, for brands such as Balmain, Chloé, Fendi, Chanel and his own eponymous brand.

The German-born visionary began his career at Balmain in the 1950s, where he worked as an assistant to Pierre Balmain. Lagerfeld’s work was recognized by the French Maison Chloé, where he worked as the brand’s creative director from 1963 to 1983, during which time he created the house’s bohemian aesthetic that became synonymous with the Chloé brand. In 1965, Lagerfeld began working for Fendi, where he transformed the sleepy wool label into a world-class fashion house by introducing the brand name Fendi Zucca. But Lagerfeld’s career will always be closely linked to Chanel, where he served as creative director for more than three decades. Lagerfeld’s reimagining of the classic Chanel tweed suit in unexpected silhouettes in the early ’90s earned him worldwide acclaim that cemented his place as one of the greatest designers of all time.
