Oppenheimer Film Review (2023): Civilization vs Knowledge

Oppenheimer’s film is Christopher Nolan’s latest masterpiece that captures one of humanity’s greatest achievements in the modern age, the atomic bomb. Full of intrigue and complex with a duration of up to three hours of walking.

Oppenheimer summary film

J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) returns to America to open a quantum physics class after studying with various scientists in Europe. He also became a professor after an invitation from an official in the field of Atomic Energy, Lewis Strauss (Robert Downey Jr.).

The Pentagon’s desire to develop weapons of mass destruction led by Leslie Groves (Matt Damon) led Oppenheimer to become the head of the Manhattan Project. He then gathered America’s best scientists to make an atomic bomb in a desert that turned into a city called Los Amalos.

His success in producing the hydrogen bomb earned him the title “Father of the Atomic Bomb”. His popularity is slowly becoming a threat, so many are trying to take him down by blaming the many victims of the atomic bomb.

A bit of Oppenheimer’s story

movie Oppenheimer i.e. one of the newest masterpieces from the master of cinematography Christopher Nolan. The achievements as well as the actions of the father of the atomic bomb after the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are presented as biographical film complex.

If you think this movie only focuses on how Oppenheimer and his team at Los Amalos created the atomic bomb, then you are wrong. There are many other sides behind the great achievement that claimed hundreds of thousands of Japanese people who were touched by it.

The duration of up to three hours is tiring. Moreover, coupled with the lack of passionate action scenes. Practically Nolan uses his storytelling skills, visuals as well as epic background music by Ludwig Göransson to make the audience sit comfortably throughout the story.

A long story about who J. Robert Oppenheimer really is, given in the shortest way possible. With a fairly fast pace of storytelling, bits of the plot feel full of meaning and lead the audience further into Oppenheimer.

The cast of A-list actors has a big hand in presenting this complicated story. Each character has its own charm. Even Einstein, who at first can only be seen as a sweetener, has become an important character that unites the stories of Oppenheimer and Prometheus.

Prometheus and human knowledge

The film Oppenheimer is based on the biography of J. Robert Oppenheimer titled American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. And Prometheus is an important figure who participates in deepening the material of this story.

Explained in opening act movie, this figure from Greek mythology is a figure who steals fire from the gods and gives it to humans. He was then imprisoned and tortured by Zeus for his actions.

This story is analogous to Oppenheimer’s success: a figure who, on the one hand, succeeds as a scientist in achieving quantum physics, which is important for human knowledge, but on the other hand must bear the moral burden of what he has created; mass murder bomb.

Nolan invites the audience into Oppenheimer’s confused thoughts. Between success as a scientist and complicated political tensions in the American superpower as a Jew who favors communist ideas.

Three hours is tiring. Furthermore, the plot is done back and forth with two different color palettes: color for films with subjective descriptions and black and white for stories that are objective. It’s not really the right film for audiences who want a light story.

Watching movies Oppenheimer it is not easy with a slow plot and a complex story with a long duration. But for those of you who want to witness first-rate storytelling from one of the best writers and directors today, this film is a must.
