Oppenheimer launches at foreign box office with strong early results – Deadline

Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated and highly acclaimed Oppenheimer has begun its overseas release with strong results against some of the director’s previous titles. On Wednesday, the Universal film opened in 10 offshore markets, profiting 2.4 million dollars and led by France and Indonesia. These are the first few days as the Cillian Murphy-led biographical drama/political thriller will play a total of 78 markets through Friday, in over 9,600 locations, 13,000 screens and more than 320 IMAX screens.

As we await the full onslaught of the highly anticipated “Barbenheimer” double bill this weekend and will have a more complete look including Warner Bros. Barbie tomorrow, we already have the initial international box office numbers for Oppenheimer, the history of the construction of the atomic bomb and the subsequent consequences.

IN France, Oppenheimer debuted to $1.4 million Wednesday from 725 screens, including 18 IMAX and two 70mm screens, as well as 11 Dolby Vision screens and six ultra-laser Kinepolis screens. The opening day is the biggest opening Wednesday for a Nolan film since then The Knight of Erresire rises. Excluding previews, Wednesday’s admissions are above MI: 7 (+23%), Dunkirk (+14%), Tenet (+28%) and Interstellar (+76%). Audience feedback is very positive with mainstream audiences rating it 4.4/5 and cinema audiences rating it 7.3/10, one of the best ratings on the market.

Indonesia bowed Wednesday with an estimated 451 thousand dollars to mark the biggest opening day ever for a Nolan film (38% ahead The Knight of Erresire rises). IMAX delivered the format’s biggest opening day ever and the biggest single-day gross in IMAX, beating Avatar 2 (+11%). Oppenheimer is playing in 10 IMAX screens and a total of 495 screens in the market. Wednesday was a public holiday in Indonesia for the Islamic New Year.

Belgium opened to $251,000 on Wednesday, the biggest opening ever for a Nolan film at the box office, beating The Knight of Erresire rises (+13%), starting (+23%) and The Dark Knight (+31%) as well as all other main compounds.

Philippines opened to $125K on Wednesday, the best opening day ever for a Nolan non-superhero film. Oppenheimer played on nine IMAX screens and a total of 198 screens.

Egypt got off to a great start with $74K on Wednesday with Oppenheimer giving 2n.d The biggest opening day for any studio film since the pandemic hit, just behind Spider-Man: No Way Home. It also easily achieved Hollywood’s biggest opening day of the year, more than doubling X fast and 7th Biggest MPA opening day of all time in admissions, up +18% Avengers: Infinity War.

Switzerland (French speaking) earned $70K in its Wednesday opening, more than double its launch days Tenet AND Batman Beginsabove Dunkirk (+29%), Interstellar (+46%) and last opener MI: 7 (+8%).

The film also had a strong opening in the Puffin Island ($31K) for the highest Nolan start outside Batman series.

Among the majors, the film opens today in Australia, Germany, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and Brazil with the UK, Spain and India following Friday.

Regarding the presale, UK/Ireland is seeing a strong take with PLFs repeating a significant portion and shows sold out during the opening weekend; Germany’s IMAX pre-sales are ahead of Universal’s X fast, Jurassic World Dominion AND Fast & Furious 9. IN Saudi Arabiapre-sales are wild, currently tracking about 32 times that X fast at the same time and setting a new record.
