Quasi Movie Review and Movie Summary (2023)

There are a few laughs here and there, but it’s mostly in the first 15-20 minutes before the gang runs out of jokes and starts repeating the same ones. Honestly, the only real joy to be found in “Quasi” is the kind that comes from seeing a group of old friends having a good time. While it’s nice to get them back on track, their pace is a little, well, not.

Like “Monty Python & the Holy Grail” — an obvious inspiration along with the work of Mel Brooks — everyone in the cast plays more than one character, but Steve Lemme gets the lead role, “Quasi,” short for Quasimodo. Narrated by Logan Roy himself (Broken Lizard alumnus Brian Cox), the hunchback from Vincent Hugo’s novel has become a torture expert for King Guy (Chandrasekhar), who wants him to kill his rival, Papa Cornelius (Paul Soter). Of course, Pope captures Quazi and tries to convince him to be the King’s killer. Caught in the middle, Quasi seeks guidance from his BFF Duchamp (Kevin Heffernan) and even catches the eye of the King’s new wife (a wasted Adrianne Palicki), who realizes he’s a better hottie than a coward. . her abusive kingdom.

The best humor in “Quasi” has that Brooks-esque sense of vaudevillian comedy. When the King learns that Quasi invented their best torture device, Guy retorts, “You made my mother-in-law?!?!” It’s a silly old-fashioned sense of humor that speaks to an era of comedy that isn’t seen much anymore, and I wish Broken Lizard could really use that “get the wife… please” silliness more often. . What Mel Brooks did at his best was take idiotic behavior and silly punchlines and elevate them with his comedic timing. Breken Lizard, at best, has similar potential.

Heffernan is definitely a solid comic actor, but I’m not convinced he has the same directorial qualities as Chandrasekhar – Heffernan has directing credits for this, and “The Slammin’ Salmon,” BL’s worst film. There is something tragic about the rhythm. At one point, I thought things were moving at a relatively good clip, and then I noticed I still had 75 minutes left. I would have guessed the movie was much further along. It’s fascinating how flat comedy can somehow warp time. “Quasi” is relatively short, but feels about twice as long.
