RACE NOTES: Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course

15: RINUS WEEKAY No. 21 BITNILE.COM Chevrolet
19: RYAN HUNTER-REAY No. 20 BITNILE.COM Chevrolet

NEXT RACE: The streets of TorontoJuly 16 (Peacock TV, 1:30 p.m. ET)

RYAN HUNTER-REAY, NO. 20 BITNILE.COM CHEVROLET

RYAN HUNTER-REAY, No. 20 BITNILE.COM Chevrolet, finished 19th: “We had a really good start, we were three positions up in the first corners. We ran into red early on at the first stop and that only put the handcuffs on us to push the strategy the rest of the day. I’m not really sure what happened in the pit sequences, I didn’t get on track once, but we bounced around all day and ended up crashing a bit. We’re going to go back and look at it, learn from it, grow from it and be better.” (Image from INDYCAR Photo)

FOR NOTE:

In his 18th NTT INDYCAR SERIES race at the Mid-Ohio sports car course, Ryan Hunter-Reay started 17th. He didn’t stay there long, moving up three positions in the first few turns. A caution on the first lap then hampered his progress to the front.

• The ensuing restart began to see cars stretch across the race track and reduce passing opportunities. Hunter-Reay made his first pit stop on lap 22, switching the opening set of red Firestone Firehawks to black.

• His second and final pit stop came on lap 51, where Chevrolet no. 20 BITNILE.COM was equipped with another set of black Firehawks to complete the race. Hunter-Reay was tasked with hitting a tough fuel number near the end of the race, but was able to hold off the hard-charging cars behind him. He took the checkered flag in 19th position.

RINUS WEEKAY, NO. 21 BITNILE.COM CHEVROLET

RINUS WEEKAY, No. 21 BITNILE.COM Chevrolet, complete 15: It was a tough race, a lot of work. We weren’t fast enough. It’s hard to pass here and track position is so important. We finished where we qualified and I think that was the case for most of the field. We made the most of what we had but it was a busy day with some pretty tough fuel economy at the end. I am very happy with my execution, but not with the result. We have to start doing better and we will work hard to get to Toronto! (Image from INDYCAR Photo)

FOR NOTE:

Rinus VeeKay started in 16th place and immediately engaged in a wide battle for position. When the race’s first and only caution flag flew just a few corners into the event, VeeKay was two spots up. After starting with an alternate series of red Firestone Firehawks, he brought Chevrolet no. 21 BITNILE.COM after 20 laps on black tires and a full fuel load.

• VeeKay cycled into 15th position, close to where he was running before his first stop. His second stint of the race was uneventful and he held that spot until his second stop on lap 49. Again, he came in 15th.

• With four laps to go, VeeKay was involved in another three-wide battle, this time heading to the front. He was pushed off the line by another competitor, allowing a car behind to run. VeeKay managed to maintain the position and finished in 15th place.
