Identity search
There is a theme about teenage life that is almost the same as that Turning red (2022) belongs to Pixar, but Ruby Gillman offers a different portrayal. This time with the story of the Kraken having to adapt to the human side.
Ruby Gillman presents a light story with a very interesting plot and can be enjoyed by the whole family. Not too concerned about the moral messages delivered, but it has a plot and approach that is different from the story between the sea monster, the Kraken.
Relieved, but this movie is not for children. It is more suitable for teenagers or young-adults because the pace of the stories is relatively fast and the everyday stories of high school teenagers are complex.
Dreamworks is really good at creating 3D animations that have their own charm. The visuals in the film come with a colorful palette. How is the description of a pale underwater, but still interesting and fascinating in some scenes.
Each character has its own charm. Ruby’s friends who are ‘rebellious’, Chelsea who has the air of a popular girl at school, and her grandmother Grandma (or Omama in the Indonesian translation) loving but firm.
Intentionally or not, the character of the red-haired mermaid also has something in common with Disney’s Ariel. This film takes a very different approach to the characters and is almost similar to the original mythology.
Kraken vs mermaids
Kirk DeMicco as director takes a fresh approach to the Kraken and the mermaid characters. The director who also directed two other animated films, The Croods (2013) and I live (2021) presents a different story compared to most other adaptations of this mythological creature.
Kirk brings back the myth of a mermaid who, despite having a beautiful face, is able to deceive other people to get what she wants. Several other mythological objects, such as Poseidon’s trident, also appear in this film.
The Kraken, which always appeared as a huge monster ready to sink ships, is now presented with a funny impression and mingles with people. The characters in this film are made by giving priority to the characteristics of Gen-Z teenagers who are full of hustle and bustle and searching for identity.
Apart from the narratives about family and identity, there are many other messages embedded in the film. It doesn’t take up too much space, but it’s interesting enough to show the appearances of different teenagers in the real world today.
