Super Mario Bros. Movie To Pass $1 Billion At The Box Office On Sunday – Deadline

With ratings through Sunday, Illumination/Nintendo/Universal’s The movie Super Mario Bros is expected to cross $1 billion globally tomorrow, becoming the first release of 2023 in the milestone and the fifth of the pandemic era. It will arrive there in 26 days. Wow!

The Aaron Horvath/Michael Jelenic-helmed ship sailed past $900 million worldwide earlier this week and as of Friday is in 970 million dollars. From this, 483 million dollars is from the international box office, domestic is in 487 million dollars.

This weekend notably included openings in Korea and Japan. Through Friday, Korea’s gross is $1.65 million in second place. In Japan, the game is strong.

This is the third title from Chris Meledandri’s Illumination to cross the $1 billion mark.

Super Mario Bros it was already publication no. 1 of 2023 globally. Reaching $1 billion means that Mario & Luigi is now tied for the biggest animated title worldwide as of 2019 and the #1 animated studio film in the same period. Super Mario is now Universal’s #3 biggest animated film ever, (back Minions AND despicable me 3, parading Minions: The Rise of Gru) and No. 7 studio titles released since 2019 worldwide.

Meldandri was at CinemaCon in Las Vegas last week and on Thursday received an award for Excellence in Animation. At the time, he shared that on opening weekend he had entered three different theaters to watch audiences watch the film. At one, he said the audience consisted of grandparents, children, couples and people dressed up “just having an amazing time.” He noted, “It dawned on me that at that moment there were 25,000 theaters across the globe showing our film and that there was a level of joy that we were providing to those audiences at a moment in time when the world needs joy so bad.” The film made history with the biggest global opening ever for an animated title.

He told the assembled exhibitors, “This whole art form is not going to slip through our fingers because everyone here is determined to make it as great as it ever was.”
