The Influencer (2023) movie review and synopsis.

This is an effective, meandering tale that’s definitely best if you can approach it with the same lack of awareness or expectation that I did, as it pulls the rug out from under the viewer after the first act and then continues to spiral in unpredictable directions. . clouds. . It’s cleverly crafted, well written and powerfully performed. I’m not sure it works as social media commentary, but it definitely clicks as a fun thriller for someone who thinks the world of Insta is shallow enough to hide her sociopathic behavior. Do you think it is dangerous to live on the Internet? There are still some real dangers out there in the real world, too.

At first, “Influencer” feels like it’s going to play out like a social media-era “Hostel,” a story about someone trying to turn international travel into visuals that reveals there are dangerous corners of the invisible world on TikTok. And yet there’s a melancholy to Emily Tennant’s performance that hints at something deeper from the start. She plays Madison, someone who has become famous on Instagram mostly by being herself, but seems to have a hard time keeping a smile when she’s not filming. She poses, takes pictures of her food and has probably made a fortune pushing free products as an influencer. She’s certainly done enough to support her journey, which has taken her to gorgeous Thailand, filmed with an effective mix of beauty and menace by cinematographer David Schuurman. Yes, it’s beautiful, but it also seems like a place where a woman traveling alone can get lost and never be seen again.

It is slowly revealed that Madison was not meant to be solo. She was going to travel with her boyfriend Ryan (Rory J. Saper), but the relationship hit a few snags before the trip, causing her to come alone. When a drunken ex hits on Madison at the resort bar, CW (Cassandra Naud) steps in to save the day and the two become instant friends. CW knows the area, taking Madison to cool bars around town. But savvy viewers watching a movie on a service like Shudder will note that the CW doesn’t like to get involved in Madison’s photo posts, and looks suspiciously at Madison when she discovers her room has been burglarized and her passport stolen. . Now Madison will have to wait at least two weeks before getting a new one. What could go wrong?
