The Little Mermaid Floats to $164M Global Run, Hit by Review Bombing Overseas – Deadline

Refresh for the latest…: Disney live action The Little Mermaid is doing well at the domestic box office, with a three-day opening of $95.5 million and a four-day projection of $117.5 million. Factoring in the international cash register 68.3 million dollarswhich makes for an estimated 163.8 million dollars global debut until Sunday. Offshore launch is lower than hoped going into the frame. But it should be noted that there was something strange going on in overseas markets with so-called review bombing in areas such as France, Korea, Germany and beyond.

While the Rob Marshall-directed update has a verified 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, overseas film rating websites, including IMDB in the UK, Brazil and Mexico as well as AlloCiné in France, posted tips during the launch when negative user reviews appeared in controversial abundance.

As we noted in our global survey, The Little Mermaid it was expected to be more of an inside game at first. However, it is quite surprising to see these reactions overseas – which are mostly believed to be led by internet trolls.

In France, where The little mermaid launched on Wednesday, AlloCiné wrote, “We are currently observing an unusual distribution of points that calls for the need for caution. We encourage you to make up your own mind about the film.” Although not unprecedented, this is a rare move. To be fair, critics in several respected media outlets including RELIEF, First AND Les Inrockuptibles did not like the film, giving it only one star.

On IMDB, a warning says: “Our rating engine has detected unusual voting activity for this title. To maintain the credibility of our rating system, an alternative weighting calculation has been applied.” This note appears on the US and Canada pages, as well as the UK, Brazil, and Mexico pages.

IMDB says it publishes weighted vote averages instead of raw data averages. “Although we accept and consider all votes received by users, no everything votes have the same effect (or ‘weight‘) in the final assessment. When unusual voting activity is detected, an alternative weighting calculation may be applied to maintain the reliability of our system,” the website explains. However, it does not disclose the exact method used to generate the estimate.

In Germany, Moviepilot showed a rating of 0.7 out of 10 previously The Little Mermaid release – much lower than any computer title. The attraction grew throughout the weekend, moving to a 5 rating.

Some complaints have been about blurry lighting or even just the reason for it all when remaking a classic. In some pockets of the world, there have unfortunately been racially charged comments.

Korea’s SBS News reported that the film had been the subject of “terrorist ratings” in an article headlined by Korean entertainment website Zapzee that translated to “Backlash Against ‘Black Mermaid’: Look mocked, ratings drop on first day” .

On Korea’s ratings portal Naver over the past few days, there has been a trend of negative ratings receiving hundreds of likes, and positive ratings receiving hundreds of thumbs up. On the day of publication, the score was 1.96, which has since evolved to 6.67.

Many have praised Halle Bailey’s performance in the end.

And, in China, it’s just a disaster. There is no audience point for Maoyan, unusual for a film already in release for several days. The item through Sunday is a miserable RMB 17.7 million ($2.5 million) with Maoyan projecting a full figure of around $4 million.

Here are the film’s top 5 opening markets: Mexico ($8.5M), UK ($6.3M), Italy ($4.7M), Brazil ($4M) and Australia ($4M dollars).
