Zendaya ‘Challenges’ Movie Moves to Spring 2024 Due to Cast Strike – Deadline

Another 2023 theatrical release is being pushed due to the SAG-AFTRA strike while MGM is pushing the Zendaya-starring, Luca Guadagnino-directed R-rated tennis romance to April 26, 2024. The pic was scheduled to open stateside on September 15, running outside of the opening night of the Venice Film Festival. That world premiere is not happening now.

With Zendaya able to promote to her 200 million followers on social media as she is one of the 25 most followed stars on Instagram worldwide, this film really needs her support to energize her fan base in theaters. Further proof of Zendaya’s influence on social media: the The challengers the trailer has already received over 150 million global views and sparked 320 conversations in the state. It’s the most-watched trailer for an original movie in its first 24 hours (meaning it’s not a sequel, reboot, or based on pre-existing IP).

The weekend before the start of summer next year is being seen as an even better spot for this film, which will be counter-programming to 20th/Marvel Studios Deadpool 3 which starts on May 3rd. There are currently no other major major releases booked on April 26 next year.

Disney already prepared for both strikes a while ago by making some changes to the release date. The A24 has just been withdrawn The problemist from the August calendar due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, and yesterday Lionsgate postponed The White Bird from August 18 to Q4 2023, as well as his Dancing Dirty continuation from February 9, 2024 date until summer 2025; that last picture still in development.
